2. Hidden Free Perks (Luggage & Showers)

If you decide to leave the airport, what do you do with your bags? Major airports (like Guangzhou and Shanghai) offer incredible free perks for transit passengers:

3. Connecting to Airport Wi-Fi

Unlike Western airports, free airport Wi-Fi in China often requires a Chinese phone number to receive an SMS verification code. If you don't have one, here is the workaround:

4. Getting to the City (Metro vs Taxi)

Do not take random taxi drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Here is how to get to the city safely:

5. The 240-Hour Transit Rules (Read Carefully)

⚠️ Do You Qualify for the Free Tour?

To leave the airport and join a free tour, you MUST qualify for the transit visa-free policy. Check these rules:

  • Nationality: Passport must be from one of 57 eligible countries (US, UK, Australia, EU, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc. — expanded Aug 2026).
  • Passport Validity: Must be valid for at least 3 months.
  • Onward Ticket: You must have a confirmed ticket to a third country (e.g., London -> Guangzhou -> Bangkok).
  • Stay area: You can travel across the 24 covered provinces (e.g. Guangdong ↔ Shanghai ↔ Zhejiang), but cannot enter non-covered regions. Guangzhou → Beijing is NOT allowed under this policy.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave the airport during a layover in China?

Yes, if you qualify for visa-free transit (240-hour policy) and your layover is at least 8 hours. Major hubs like Guangzhou and Shanghai offer official free transit tours.

Is there free luggage storage at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport?

Yes, transit passengers with a layover under 48 hours can often get free luggage storage at designated counters in T1 and T2. Show your onward boarding pass.

How do I connect to airport Wi-Fi in China without a Chinese phone number?

Use the self-service kiosks to scan your passport and print a Wi-Fi password. Alternatively, ask the information desk for help.

Can I buy a local SIM card at the airport?

Yes, major airports sell tourist SIMs. However, they are subject to the Great Firewall and you still can't access Google/WhatsApp without a VPN. We highly recommend an international eSIM instead.
