How to Get Internet in China

Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram are blocked. Here is exactly how to set up an eSIM, bypass the firewall, and navigate with Amap.

📑 In This Guide

If you rely on Google Maps, Gmail, or WhatsApp, stepping into China can feel like stepping into a digital blackout. The Great Firewall (GFW) blocks almost all Western social media and search engines.

But here is the good news: You do not need to be a hacker to bypass it. You just need to prepare the right digital toolkit before you board the plane.

1. The Brutal Reality (The Firewall)

Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and even some VPN websites are blocked in mainland China.

💡 The Biggest Tourist Trap: Airport Wi-Fi

Do not plan to "figure it out when I land." To use airport Wi-Fi in China, you usually need to scan your passport and receive an SMS verification code to a Chinese phone number (which you don't have). You must solve your internet problem before you fly.

2. eSIM vs. VPN (Which to Use?)

You have two main options to access Google and WhatsApp. We strongly recommend the first one.

Feature International eSIM (Recommended) VPN App
How it works Routes data through your home country. Bypasses the firewall automatically. Encrypts your connection. Can be unstable or blocked.
Reliability 100% Reliable. Works exactly like home data. Hit or miss. Free VPNs are useless; paid ones get blocked during holidays.
Setup Buy online, scan QR code, turn on roaming. Must download app before you fly.

Verdict: Buy an International eSIM. A VPN is only useful if you plan to use local hotel Wi-Fi or a local SIM card.

3. How to Buy & Activate eSIM

An international eSIM (like Airalo, Nomad, or Holafly) is a digital SIM card you download to your phone. Prices range from $5 to $35 per week depending on data.

  1. Check Your Phone Compatibility
Dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number pops up, your phone supports eSIM. Ensure your phone is carrier-unlocked.
  2. Buy the eSIM (At Home)
Go to Airalo or Nomad. Select "China" and buy a data package. (Do NOT buy a local physical SIM on arrival—they don't bypass the firewall).
  3. Install the eSIM (At Home)
You will receive a QR code via email. Go to your phone settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan the QR code. Label it "China Data".
  4. Activate Upon Landing
When you land, turn off your primary SIM (to avoid roaming charges) and turn on the "China Data" eSIM. Enable Data Roaming in your settings. The firewall is now bypassed.

🚫 Do NOT Buy a Local SIM Card at the Airport

Local SIMs are cheap, but they are subject to the Great Firewall. You won't be able to access Google or WhatsApp unless you also have a working VPN. Stick to the International eSIM.

4. Amap: Your Navigation Lifeline

Google Maps does not work in China. It's not just blocked—it doesn't have accurate local data. You must download Amap (高德地图).

Amap is the map app used by 1.4 billion locals. It has an English interface, accurate public transit routes, and real-time traffic.

5. What if my eSIM fails?

If you land and have no internet, follow these 3 steps:

If you need to ask a local for Wi-Fi:
请问Wi-Fi密码是多少?
Excuse me, what is the Wi-Fi password?

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy an eSIM after landing in China?

No. Airport Wi-Fi requires a Chinese phone number to receive an SMS verification code. You MUST buy and install your eSIM before you fly.

Do I need a VPN if I have an international eSIM?

No. International roaming eSIMs route your data through your home country, automatically bypassing the Great Firewall.

Are free VPNs safe for China?

No. Free VPNs are easily detected and blocked by the Great Firewall. They are also a massive security risk. Use an international eSIM instead.

Does Apple Maps work in China?

Apple Maps works, but it is powered by Amap behind the scenes. However, Google Maps is completely useless. We recommend using Amap directly for the best experience.

Which iPhones support eSIM in China?

Most modern iPhones support eSIM, but there is a catch: iPhones bought in mainland China do NOT have eSIM hardware. If you bought your iPhone in the US, UK, or EU, you are fine. Just check by dialing *#06#.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop?

Yes, most international eSIMs allow hotspot sharing. However, check the fine print of your provider, as some heavy-data eSIMs restrict tethering to prevent abuse.

Why is Amap draining my battery?

GPS navigation always drains battery. Because you won't have Google Maps as a backup, consider bringing a small power bank (under 20,000mAh to comply with airline rules).
