Amap (高德地图)

Google Maps is blocked. Amap is your lifeline. But English mode doesn't mean it works perfectly. Here's how to not get lost.

Download Amap (高德地图) before you fly. It integrates navigation, public transit, and ride-hailing (DiDi) into one app. It's what 1.4 billion locals use.

What-if: I search in English, but can't find the place?

The Translation Gap

The Reality
  • You switch Amap to English, but place names (like restaurants or small hotels) are still listed in Chinese.
  • Typing "The Forbidden City" might give you the wrong gate or zero results.
  • Addresses in China are written from large to small (City -> District -> Street -> Building).
The Solution
  • Always copy Chinese characters: Use Trip.com or your hotel booking to get the Chinese name (e.g., 四季民福烤鸭店).
  • Paste it: Paste the Chinese characters into Amap. It will pinpoint the exact location.
  • Change Language: Go to Me → Settings → Language to switch to English. The UI will translate, but the map data stays local.

What-if: My map freezes in the subway or a scenic area?

Network Dead Zones

The Reality
  • Central Beijing subway stations or mountain areas (like Zhangjiajie) often have zero signal.
  • If you haven't downloaded offline maps, you won't know which exit to take.
  • Airport Wi-Fi requires a Chinese phone number or SMS verification, which you don't have.
The Solution
  • Download offline maps before you fly: Profile (Me) → Offline Maps → Select "Beijing" or your destination city.
  • Use an International eSIM: Because it routes data through your home country, it bypasses local firewalls and often maintains a signal better than airport Wi-Fi.

What-if: I call a taxi, but the driver messages me and I don't understand?

Ride-Hailing Integration

The Reality
  • Amap integrates with multiple ride-hailing services. You can call a car right from the map.
  • The driver will send messages like "I'm at the North Gate, where are you?" in Chinese.
  • You can't speak Chinese to tell them you're at the Starbucks.
The Solution
  • Use Quick Replies: Amap has built-in auto-translate quick replies (e.g., "I'm at the pick-up point").
  • Send a Photo: Use the chat feature to snap a photo of the store you are standing in front of. A picture is worth a thousand words.
  • Copy-Paste Phrase: Send them a translated message to tell them exactly where you are.
我在这个定位点,请问你在哪?
I am exactly at this pin on the map. Where are you?
