DiDi Survival

Uber doesn't work here. DiDi is your best friend. Here is how to call a ride without speaking a word of Chinese.

⚠️ Important: Do not take random taxis from the airport terminal. They might refuse to use the meter or take you the long way. Always use DiDi.

Ride-Hailing Rescue Cards

1. The Driver is Calling, But You Can't Understand Them
✨ The Vibe: You book a ride, the driver calls you to confirm your location, but they speak rapid-fire Mandarin and you panic.
🚨 The Reality (Avoid)
  • Phone Panic: Hanging up on the driver makes them cancel the ride, which might cost you a cancellation fee.
  • Fake Taxis: Walking to the street to hail a cab means you might get scammed by an unlicensed driver.
🚑 The Solution (Do This)
  • The AI Translator Hack (Must-Try): Answer the call on speakerphone. Open your Doubao (豆包) app, use its "Simultaneous Interpretation" (同声传译) or voice translation feature. Let Doubao listen to the driver, and show it to the driver or speak into it to reply. It works like magic!
  • Use the Built-in Chat: If you don't want to answer, open the DiDi app and tap the Chat (Message) icon. DiDi has a built-in real-time translator. Type in English: "I am at the main entrance wearing a red jacket."
  • Quick Reply: DiDi has an auto-reply button: "I cannot answer the phone right now." The driver will see it in Chinese.
2. Airport to Hotel: Which Car to Choose?
✨ The Vibe: You have massive luggage. A standard ride might not fit your bags, and you need help after a long flight.
🚨 The Reality (Avoid)
  • Luggage Trap: Standard "Express" (快车) cars are usually compact sedans. With 2+ large suitcases, the trunk won't close, and drivers won't help you lift them.
  • Lost at the Terminal: Waiting at the departure curb. Ride-hailing cars are banned from the curb; they will cancel on you.
🚑 The Solution (Do This)
  • Choose "Premier" (专车): For airport transfers, select "Premier". It's slightly more expensive but offers better service—drivers will help load your bags, and often provide free bottled water.
  • Check Car Type & Capacity: Read the car model description. If you have a lot of luggage, or 3+ passengers, directly select the "7-Seater Business" (7座商务车) to guarantee space.
  • Follow the Signs: Look for signs saying "Ride-hailing Pick-up" (网约车上车点). It's usually in the P2 or B1 parking garage. Follow the signs, do not wait on the street.
3. Payment Failed / Cash is Rejected
✨ The Vibe: You arrive at the hotel, try to pay, but your card fails. The driver doesn't have change for a 100 RMB bill.
🚨 The Reality (Avoid)
  • No Card Reader: DiDi drivers do NOT carry credit card machines. You cannot swipe your Visa in the car.
  • No Cash Change: Many drivers don't carry cash anymore. If your fare is 23 RMB and you hand them 100 RMB, they might not have change.
🚑 The Solution (Do This)
  • Link to Alipay/WeChat: In the DiDi app, go to Settings -> Payment Method. Bind it to Alipay or WeChat Pay. The money will be deducted automatically when you arrive.
  • International Credit Card: DiDi now supports directly binding international Visa/Mastercard. Go to "Payment" and add your card.
